The prettiest little town on the coast
Penguin is a proper seaside town, all Bass Strait views, a lovely main street, and a giant penguin statue that has to be seen to be believed. There are cafés for a slow breakfast, a bakery worth the walk, and a Sunday market that’s a treasure trove of vintage and second hand items.
The beach is a short stroll, the walking tracks head up into the Dial Range behind us, and the whole place has a gentle, unhurried feel.
It’s the sort of town where nobody’s in a rush, which suits us rather well.
Along the water
Beaches, cliffs and cold clean air
The north-west coast is Tasmania at its most windswept and beautiful. Beach-comb at Sulphur Creek, drive the coast road toward Table Cape and its tulip fields (spectacular in spring), or push west to Stanley and climb The Nut for one of the great views in the state.
Ulverstone is fifteen minutes east, Burnie a little further west, and there are quiet coves and empty stretches of sand all the way along if you’re happy to pull over and wander.
Inland
Mountains, canyons and caves
Cradle Mountain is about an hour and ten from the gate, which makes a very doable day trip. Dove Lake, the wombats, and if you catch it under snow in winter, something you won’t forget.
Closer to home, Leven Canyon is a stunning short drive with a lookout that drops away beneath you, and Gunns Plains has caves and a wildlife park if you fancy something different. The Dial Range starts more or less at our back fence.

Finding us
Easier than you’d think
Straight off the Spirit of Tasmania at Devonport, we’re about a forty-minute drive west. That makes us one of the first proper escapes you’ll reach, and one of the hardest to leave.
Rough drive times from the farmlet:
- Penguin town — 3 minutes
- Devonport (ferry) — 30 minutes
- Ulverstone — 15 minutes
- Cradle Mountain — 1 hr 40
- Launceston — 1 hr 20
- Stanley — 1 hr 20
Everything worth seeing on this coast is under an hour and a half away, which means you can do a proper day out and still be home for golden hour with the goats.
